Der Begriff der personalen Identität ist, so wird argumentiert, ein formaltheoretisches Konstrukt.

Nach einer Explikation dieser theoretischen Bestimmung werden ausgewählte Beispiele der zeitgenössischen Kritik am psychologischen und soziologischen Identitätsdenken analysiert. Dabei werden neben theoretischen Problemen auch und vor allem empirische Defizite bemängelt. Sowohl die ausführlicher analysierte quantitative als auch die qualitative Studie rechtfertigen keine epochale Diagnose eines radikalen Strukturwandels moderner Identität.

Ein 'postmodernes' Selbst, das sich strukturell-radikal von den in modernen Identitätstheorien vorgeschlagenen Bestimmungen unterscheidet, muss vorerst als empirisch nicht begründeter Mythos betrachtet werden. After an explication of this theoretical determination selected examples of contemporary critics on psychological and sociological identity thinking will be analysed. The alternative conceptualisations of a person and the corresponding empirical surveys on the 'post-modern' self will be particularly considered, namely Wolfgang Welsch's conception of the 'plural subject' and — very briefly — Wolfgang Kraus' work on the 'narrative self' in the late modern age as well as Kenneth Gergen's analyses on the 'saturated self'.

Here — among theoretical problems — especially the empirical deficiencies will be faulted. Both the more detailed analysed quantitative and the qualitative study do not justify an epochal diagnosis of a radical structural change of modern identity. A 'post-modern' self, which is structurally radically different from the determinations coming from identity theories, must be considered as a myth which is — for the moment - empirically not justified.
